Mechanical Handling
Turner Explosion Protection Systems supply mechanical handling
equipment (MHE) conversions for surface, mining and military
applications, which comply to the essential health and safety
requirements of the ATEX directive 94/9/EC and/or with the
following standards:
• BS EN 1755:2000 Safety of industrial trucks - Operation
in potentially explosive atmospheres - Use in flammable gas,
vapour, mist and dust. for Forklifts.
• BS EN1834-1:2000 Reciprocating internal combustion engines -
Safety requirements for design and construction of engines for use
in potentially explosives atmospheres - Part1: Group II engines for
use in flammable gas and vapour atmospheres.
• BS EN1834-2:2000 Reciprocating internal combustion engines -
Safety requirements for design and construction of engines for use
in potentially explosive atmospheres. Group I engines for use in
underground workings susceptible to firedamp and/or combustible
dust.
• BS EN1834-3:2000 Reciprocating internal combustion engines -
Safety requirements for design and construction of engines for use
in potentially explosive atmospheres. Group II engines for use in
flammable dust atmospheres.
• MoD - JSP 482 July 2008, Chapter 16, Edition 3. Vehicles and
mobile mechanical handling equipment (MHE) in explosives
facilities.
When specifying a new piece of (civilian) MHE, the following
questions need to be addressed:
• Equipment Group - I (mining) or II (surface).
• Area Classification - Zone 1 (gas), Zone 2 (gas), Zone 21
(dust), Zone 22 (dust) or Safe Area.
Refer to BS EN60079-10-1 (gas) and Refer to BS EN60079-10-2
(dust).
• Equipment Category - M2, 2G, 3G, 2D or 3D (derived from area
classification).
• Gas Grouping (for gas atmospheres) - IIA, IIB or IIC.
Refer to EN 60079-20:2000.
• Dust Grouping (for dust atmospheres) - IIIA, IIIB or
IIIC
Refer to EN61241 series.
• Temperature Class - T3 (200°C), T4 (135°C), etc.
Refer to EN 60079-20:2000 (gas) and EN61241 series (dust).
For military MHE, the following questions need to be
addressed:
• Category of Potentially Explosive Site (PES) - Category A
(gas), Category B (dust) or Category C (explosives).
• Area Classification - Zone 1 (gas), Zone 2 (gas), Zone 21
(dust) or Zone 22 (dust).
• Equipment Category - 2G, 3G, 2D or 3D.
• Gas Grouping (for gas atmospheres) - IIA, IIB or IIC.
• Dust Grouping (for dust atmospheres) - IIIA, IIIB or
IIIC.
For Equipment Category 3G working in Zone 2 formally classified
hazardous areas, Turner Explosion Protection Systems fit the 3G
AIR® infra-red gas detection system. Follow link here…
For Added Safety when working in Safe Areas and handling
flammable gas, Turner Explosion Protection Systems fit the AIR
Safe® infra-red gas detection system. Follow link here…
